Innerwear As Outerwear: "Little Bandits", Lonely Hearts' A/W 2011 Collection

Lonely Hearts has some of the most gorgeous geometric lingerie & bodysuits I've seen, and I love the way it's styled in their A/W 2011 collection's lookbook. They posted some photos on Facebook last week, and I can't help but post some of the outfits I'd love to wear.

Summertime Clothes... Or, Lingerie

Lately I've been rarely posting on Fridays, but when my friend Erica sent me a link to this set today, I knew it was necessary this week. All I could say for about 10 minutes was, "OH MY GOD SO CUTE".

The polka dots and the perfect scalloping detail hooked me, but the way she styled it—with a high-waisted denim skirt and a classic cardigan—completely won me over. This is exactly how I love to see lingerie incorporated into daily outfits, and it was such an adorable find. Thank you Erica!

Winter, I'm so over you. Spring, hurry up.

Say Hi to Thursday: Kimini Stretch-Silk Robe by 3.1 Phillip Lim

Say Hi to Thursday, a special day of the week when there's only one more work day before a glorious weekend awaits. Pretty Little Underthings will showcase a weekend-perfect piece we'd love to wear.

Kimini Stretch-Silk Robe by 3.1 Phillip Lim

There's nothing worse than loungewear/robes that can't give a little when you just want to relax, which is why I have a hunch that this divine 3.1 Phillip Lim piece made of stretchy silk would be so comfy. And when it comes in such a pretty, blushy peach color, how can you not want to try it on? Luxury, comfort, and a little bit of sparkle all in one. And I love sparkle.

Hump Day Pick: Valentine's Day Sale Edition

If you're a regular reader, you know that Pretty Little Underthings is obsessed with Journelle. Amazing selections, chocolates & Evian in the dressing rooms, and sweet Journellettes like Mara and Valerie totally make my day. And then there's the semi-annual sale. The incredible sale that makes lingerie dreams come true, which also happens to be going on now.

So I decided to dedicate this week's Hump Day post to three amazing sale picks that are perfect for Valentine's Day—whether you have a honey or not.

1. Fleur of England Cupped Babydoll
I'm a sucker for eyelash lace and silk that feels so smooth against the skin. The classic pattern is a glamourous alternative to modern-day babydolls and the black-and-white movie glory days when cigarettes where everywhere (but don't smoke, your lingerie will smell!), romance was mandatory, and women always wore lipstick.

Cupped Babydoll, on sale $175 (regularly $350)

2. Andres Sarda Pollock Night Dress

Stunning! It's like Marilyn Monroe meets the Black Swan and dialed down the transparency by 75%. This is a chemise to twirl and swirl in, to feel like a princess in, to love in.

Pollock Night Dress, on sale $180 (regularly $600)

3. Damaris Amoretta Bodysuit
I had to include one for the ladies who aren't the chemise type. I posted a Mimi Holliday version of this bodysuit in black as a Tempting Tuesdays post a few months ago, and this one is more hottie-hot than bisou-bisou sweet, especially in this fiery-red (almost orange) color. If you really want to spice things up, wear it under your date outfit, and watch him go up in flames as you peel off your layers.

Amoretta Bodysuit, on sale $195 (regularly $390)

Say Hi to Thursday: Key Lime Set by Jenna Leigh

Say Hi to Thursday, a special day of the week when there's only one more work day before a glorious weekend awaits. Pretty Little Underthings will showcase a weekend-perfect piece we'd love to wear.

Key Lime Set by Jenna Leigh
I'M TIRED OF WINTER ALREADY. I just want sweet sunshine and warm weather again. But it's only January, so I know I'll have to be patient. Luckily, Jenna Leigh made this super-cute, super-sunny set for Anthropologie and it'll have to hold us over until we get some real sunshine again.

Sizing note: a small may not fit properly in the bust if you're an A. Larger A's/Small B's might have some luck, but none for smaller than that, sadly. I love long-line bralettes so I was a little sad when it didn't fit right in the cups, though my bank account cried for joy. (Yes, I tried it on—I couldn't help it. It was just sitting there, looking so bright and cheery! Don't judge. You would've done it too.)

Intimate Interview: Marni Franks of Thousand Dancers

I came across Thousand Dancers when a brightly patterned bra on Urban Outfitters' website caught my eye, and after a quick Google search, I think it took me about 3 minutes total to fall in love with these pieces. Marni Franks, textile & graphic designer and the creative force behind the Patti Smith-inspired intimates line, generously agreed to an interview despite current flood conditions in her native Australia.

Pretty Little Underthings: You studied graphic and textile design and experiment with a variety of methods to achieve your prints. What inspired you to start an intimates line?
Marni Franks: I’ve always adored textiles and even when studying graphic design, I took screen-printing classes and used my assignments to design textile ranges for intimates and bed linen.

I love the freedom of expression that intimates allow; they’re like the wearer’s little secret.  You can experiment so much more with color and prints in intimates and not be trapped by fashion trends.

PLU: I adore your line for the vibrant prints and variety of styles. Which pieces are your favorites?
Marni: My favorites change all the time, but at the moment I’m loving a combination of the Barefoot underwire bra in the Lennox digital print with the G.L.O.R.I.A. ruffle brief in salmon silk.

marni's current favorite bra, barefoot underwire in lennox digital print

PLU: Would you say there’s a specific type of woman you’re designing for? What are some of her personality traits and interests?
Marni: I like to think that the Thousand Dancers girl is a little bit different. She loves showing off bright intimates under loose tanks and sheer vintage dresses. She rocks out alone to rolling stones records in her living room whilst drinking scotch from candy colored coffee mugs. She matches her bra straps with her eye shadow, but clashes with her bag and shoes!

Urban Outfitters recently sold your Nadia set online to the US market. Will there be opportunities to purchase your pieces in the US from other retailers or from your own website soon?

Marni: Yes definitely! The Urban Outfitters opportunity was amazing, I had two different bras on sale though them, the Lennox print and the Nadia print. Both have sold very well which has been really exciting!

US customers are also able to purchase off the Thousand Dancers website and I would love love love to get some items into US retailers. If any retailers are interested, they can contact me at
marni's current favorite bottoms, G.L.O.R.I.A. ruffle briefs in salmon silk

PLU: What are some of the challenges you’ve had to overcome to launch your line?
Marni: I launched the label on the day the Global Financial Crisis and as I write this my hometown of Brisbane, Australia is in a flood crisis. We’re all sitting and waiting for the waters to subside so we can get out there and help clean it all up. [Ed. note: information on how you can help relief organizations in Australia is at the end of this post.]

I’ve faced a lot of barriers on a macro level and even more on a micro scale. It hasn’t been an easy ride, but when the little wins come along—like being stocked in Urban Outfitters and getting website hits from across the globe—it makes it all incredibly worthwhile.

I get up every day wanting to do nothing else but keep building this label and I’m so incredibly lucky to get the opportunity to do that.

PLU: What advice would you give to other aspiring designers?
Marni: I would tell all aspiring designers to make sure you keep enjoying what you do. Establishing your own label is a lot of work. It’s only 5% design and 95% administration, marketing, sales and stock inventory. But if you’re really serious about it, then go for it.
Thanks Marni!

I asked Marni if there were any specific relief organizations she'd like to mention:
- The main one is the Premier's Flood Appeal to support the Queensland Flood victims.

- Brisbane RSPCA, who is our main organization for the care of sick and injured animals. Their head office was destroyed in the floods and they're not a government supported charity.

Guest Blogger Stories: Zinke Trunk Show at Forty Winks

If you're a regular reader of my blog, you know how much I love Zinke and how much I adore the ladies of Forty Winks. So of course my head nearly exploded when I heard about the Zinke trunk show at Forty Winks! One of my best friends, Deborah Yi, is amazing and trekked through remnants of the Boston blizzard to take a few photos for Pretty Little Underthings. Here's the trunk show through her eyes:

I have to say, as a lingerie virgin, I thought it would be a little bit overwhelming to go to my first ever lingerie trunk show, but I was so enamored by the Zinke pieces. Everything is so delicate but bold at the same time. And the colors! It's kind of funny because most of my wardrobe consists of black/gray/white and neutral tones, but for lingerie and pretty little underthings, I think I really gravitate towards colors. The prices were a bit out of my budget (for now!), but I feel like it should be every girl's goal in life to own and wear a ruffled hammered silk royal purple romper.

I'm definitely going to return to Forty Winks as Valentine's Day approaches. There's something about that little boutique that is just so precious.

Say Hi to Thursday: Fortnight Lingerie Shirley Satin Robe

Say Hi to Thursday, a special day of the week when there's only one more work day before a glorious weekend awaits. Pretty Little Underthings will showcase a weekend-perfect piece we'd love to wear.

Shirley Satin Robe by Fortnight Lingerie
A classic satin robe, in classic black, and for a reasonable price! I feel like most robes I've seen that are similar to this are either really expensive, or look really cheap. This one by Fortnight is neither, and looks  silky-soft to the touch.

Shirley Satin Robe, $75 CAD. Available at

Hump Day Pick: Lure or Be Lured Set by Elle Macpherson

Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but sapphire-hued lingerie takes "lover" status, especially with patterned mesh panels and unconventional shoulder straps. This plunge bra is perfect for the ladies who are on the smaller side of an A-cup since it runs a bit shallow, but the underwire gives a lil' bit of lift too. I'm all for mix-and-matching lingerie, but this is a set that's meant to be together, forever. Kinda like diamonds.

Lure or Be Lured Bra, $70. Available at
Lure or Be Lured Bikini, $35. Available at

Tempting Tuesdays: Araks Absinthe Teddy

Tuesdays will feature a lustworthy lingerie set and a suggested retailer. I think we all need a little something beautiful to at least look at to get us through the week. Hope you love them as much as I do!

Absinthe Teddy by Araks
I know this is part of their fall collection, and it's named for an intense alcoholic beverage, but this lush green (pun intended) makes me excited for spring! A gorgeous texture combo of cotton crepe and silk charmeuse with thank-god-you-can-pee snaps, it's perfect to pair with skirts, shorts, or jeans. The scoop back will make people look twice when you take off your cardigan, too.

Absinthe Teddy, $220. Available at

Say Hi to Thursday: La Fee Verte Silk Chiffon Chemise

Say Hi to Thursday, a special day of the week when there's only one more work day before a glorious weekend awaits. Pretty Little Underthings will showcase a weekend-perfect piece we'd love to wear.

Silk Chiffon Chemise by La Fee Verte
Loungewear that doesn't look like loungewear! I love this chemise for looking like a luxurious tunic top that I would wear out with leggings & boots. A belt could look cute, though I wouldn't want to damage the fabric and I prefer a free-flowing, free-spirited look. Add a pair of statement earrings and I'll wear this to your party!

Silk-chiffon chemise, $200. Available at Silkybottom.

Hump Day Pick: Fête de Coquine Set by Mimi Holliday

I adore this Fête de Coquine Silk Satin Bra & Lace Thong by Mimi Holliday. The cuts are classic Mimi styles, and the silk and lace details area just right, per usual. The bright raspberry red makes me smile and warms up an otherwise chilly Wednesday. Did ya see the little velvet bows on the bra, too?

Tempting Tuesdays: Moon Landing Chemise by The Lake and Stars

Tuesdays will feature a lustworthy lingerie set and a suggested retailer. I think we all need a little something beautiful to at least look at to get us through the week. Hope you love them as much as I do!

Moon Landing Silk Chiffon Chemise by The Lake and Stars
This chemise by The Lake and Stars has 1. sparkles, 2. a super-sexy cut-out bodice, and 3. their signature hook & eye closure that's supportive enough for the ladies who need it. I saw this on different boutique's sites, but I finally saw it in person at Journelle SoHo and spent more time ooh-ing and aah-ing over it than was probably appropriate. Go try it on. Did I already mention it has sparkles?

Moon Landing Chemise, $195. Available at

It's Swim Time!

Though I do love snowboarding, the blizzard last week made me long for the summertime and beach days, and it feels so far away. Good thing boutiques are already stocking swimwear for those winter-time getaways, so if you're lucky enough to escape the cold for a weekend or so, you might like this pretty little swimsuit!
Wild Pansies Francine Swimsuit by Eberjey
I'm a fan of bandeau tops 'cos I like to avoid unflattering tan lines that peek out of my tank tops, and the floral print on this one is simple without being boring. The cheeky bottoms are ruched and sassy, and the adjustable sides give you a more customized fit. Love!

Francine top, $74. Bottoms, $62. Available at Forty Winks.
